Reviving History: The Repurposing of a Historical Building in Old Town

As the general contractor for Watterson Brands, Shoreline Construction takes immense pride in embarking on a journey that breathes new life into a piece of history in Old Town. One historical building on this property holds significant value to the town, and our team is dedicated to preserving its essence while creating a new and functional space to be called Ma Daisy’s.

The first step in this ambitious endeavor was to determine the best approach to preserve the historical building. Working in close collaboration with the Town of Bluffton, we were presented with two options. After careful consideration, we decided on a meticulous process - taking it apart piece by piece, capturing every detail through photographs and documentation, and then reconstructing it into a new structure. The old skin or facade will find its place on the freshly built structure, retaining the charm of the past.

Understanding the structural challenges associated with relocating a building that has already been moved twice before, we knew that a unique approach was required.

Our team at Shoreline Construction, alongside our project partners Pearce Scott Architects and Ward Edwards Engineering, delved into the task with determination and creativity.

To ensure every piece finds its rightful place during reconstruction, we enlisted the expertise of Re:Purpose Savannah, a women+-led 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Specializing in the deconstruction and reuse of historic buildings, their approach aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability. Under the guidance of their Director of Deconstruction, Katie Fitzhugh, an all-female crew from Re:Purpose Savannah took charge of the reconstruction process.

On-site, the crew meticulously reconstructed and labeled each piece to ensure easy reference during the rebuilding phase.

Elevations were prominently posted, guiding the Shoreline Construction team throughout the project. By stacking everything neatly on palettes, the reconstruction process will be streamlined, and every piece will find its rightful place as the building takes shape.

As we progress through the repurposing process, our primary focus remains on public safety and structural integrity. Our team is committed to ensuring that Ma Daisy's stands strong for generations to come, resonating with both its historical significance and contemporary functionality.

This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the dedication to preserving our past while building for the future. Through the combined efforts of Watterson Brands, Shoreline Construction, Pearce Scott Architects, Ward Edwards Engineering, and Re:Purpose Savannah, Ma Daisy's will once again become a vibrant centerpiece in the heart of Old Town. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative journey.
